Chael Sonnen put up one hell of a fight against UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva, and now he’s back on the horse talking up their scheduled rematch:

“Last time I defeated the myth, this time I’m gonna defeat the man,” Sonnen said. “Look, if I had beat him, I would have had to come back and beat him again anyway. So nothing in my career has changed. I was the best fighter before the fight, I’m the best fighter after it.”

There might be some who would argue that point, like say, Anderson Silva, but let’s not quibble. Sonnen is entertaining as hell when he’s hyping a fight and he delivered right up to the brink on his promise to beat Silva up.

The rematch should be an excellent fight, and that’s the most important thing…

Chael Sonnen was alone when it came to promoting his title fight with Anderson Silva at UFC 117.

Silva did what Silva does; stand above the fray and wait for the fight to start.

But Sonnen drove the action before the fight, and he drove the action during the fight until the last heartbreaking moment when Silva slapped an artful and desperate submission on him out of nowhere to retain the title.

Mike Straka talked to Sonnen after the fight, and this interview convinced me that the fight I want to see is a rematch for the middleweight title.

Anderson Silva

Middleweights Anderson Silva and challenger Chael Sonnen put on a cracking good donnybrook at the Oracle Arena that largely lived up it’s intense hype.

The California State Athletic Commission will release official figures early next week.

Silva, recently hammered by his employer and fans for his confrontation cage style, retained his middleweight title in the main event with a game comeback victory which saw him behind with the judges and losing the first four rounds by a large margin.

Silva locked in a triangle choke in the final two minutes and secured his career-revitalizing victory over the relentless Sonnen.

Jon Fitch, in typical Fitchian style, put on a dull but effective campaign against a lackluster Thiago Silva for a unanimous-decision win.Similar Posts:

Anderson Silva, Chael Sonnen, Matt Hughes, and Stefan Struve earned $60,000 “fight night”‘ bonuses for their performances at Saturday’s UFC 117.

Chael Sonnen managed to make good on his promise to dominate – but sadly, for only 20 of the scheduled 25 minutes. Silva proved why he’s the best in the world with his sudden submission victory.

Silva and Sonnen earned “Fight of the Night” honors, Silva and Hughes scored “Submission of the Night” bonuses, and Struve earned “Knockout of the Night.”

Thiago Alves

Thiago Alves failed to cut an extra half-pound in the two hours he had to do it after the official UFC 117 weigh-ins, and as a result he’ll be 20% lighter when it comes his purse.

A galling outcome for sure, but more so is the fact that his opponent tonight, Jon Fitch, gets that cash.

Rumor had it that Alves was struggling to make weight down and those rumors were well-founded as Alves failed on his first attempt.  He tipped the scales at 171.5 lbs. For a welterweight bout, Alves needed to hit the 170lb limit with a one pound allowance, for a final target of 171lbs.

This marks the second time in his UFC career Alves has failed to make weight for a welterweight fight. Alves was also suspended in the past for testing positive for banned diuretic drugs used to speed urination.

UFC president Dana White said the winner of Fitch-Alves would get the next title shot.

Alves was paid $60,000 for his last fight (a title shot against Georges St. Pierre) and if his purse for this fight is similar he will be saying adios to  around $12,000 to Fitch for missing weight.Similar Posts:

If you’re carrying a card and fighting for the world championship, there should be pressure. I’m like a wounded animal backed into a corner. I’ve been calling this guy out for four years. I became the No. 1 contender on February 6, and on February 7 he put out a press release saying why he doesn’t want to fight me.

I’ve certainly had a good run of exposure. I’m not here to get the silver medal and say that I was in the main event in UFC. I’m after the championship.

Getting to beat up Anderson Silva is a bonus. I’d give him a rematch that night. Beating Anderson Silva is like eating Chinese food. Twenty minutes after you’re done, you want to do it again.”
