It takes a lot of cash money to live up to the style boxer James Toney is accustomed to, and according to published reports, UFC President Dana White is going to provide a nice pile of that legal tender for Toney tonight when he meets Randy Couture at UFC 118.
Not only is Toney expected to cash in to the tune of somewhere between $750,000 and $1,000,000, he fully expects to need some of that for his legal defense. The first time he donned a pair of the UFC-approved, four-ounce MMA gloves, Toney was shocked.
“I said, ‘Serious? Are you kidding me? I have to check my bank account to make sure I have the money for bail because I’m going in for murder.’ ”
This week Toney was flashing a pair of diamond bracelets on his right arm which he said set him backabout $10,000 each.”
He was also sporting, at least according to his accounting, a $5,000 diamond ring, a 255-karat diamond watch clocking in at $185,000 and $200,000 necklace. He would have been even more resplendent with stones if not for an ‘accident’ which resulted in the loss of a huge diamond earring.
“I lost the big one,” he said. “I was being James Toney, fighting in a parking lot back home in Detroit. … It fell off.”
Diamonds aren’t the only stones Toney has, taking on Randy Couture at his own game indicates that “Lights Out” also has balls made from a slightly less valuable commodity – brass.
Toney’s friends and handlers think he’s nuts for trying it, but in the fight game, money talks.
“MMA is the king of the s*** right now,” Toney said. “I can’t get no fights.”
